Five Stick Friday

"On my best behavior…Maybe"

A Day of Reflection during Lent

I woke up this morning reflecting. We’re now in the 9th day of Lent and I’ve held true to my “no public social media activity” promise. It’s actually been cathartic.

Here’s some things I’ve realized over the last nine days.

1. Social Media is kinda cool…but it’s all just a bunch of people speaking into the ether. Without ever knowing much about who’s reading, who cares ( if anyone), and whether their words are just lost into oblivion. So…I realize in this reflection that I’ve wasted a lot of time doing the exact same. Yeah, I’m only 9 days in…but this might be a permanent vacation after Lent is over.

2. Social Media has unfortunately revealed a lot about a lot of people that I didn’t really want to know. It stings when you realize that people you believed to be good-hearted are just not. The former president is an awful person…and he’ll get his…but his “legacy” is revealing that I had a LOT of awful people in my midst that I never realized were cruel, bigoted, and basically nasty people.

3. Social Media is built to distribute disinformation. No further explanation required.

But that wasn’t what I was reflecting on this morning. Quite the opposite. I woke up thinking about my daughter and her art career continuing to blow up. And my son, who finishes his masters in a few weeks, interviewing for his first professional job. And just being so very thankful for both of them. They are 28 and 25 respectively now…we lived through the “young adult years” and are all intact.

So as I continue a social media blackout, I will use Five Stick Friday to occassionally just blog simple things that come up.

This seems easier.
