Last night Erin’s boyfriend mentioned a short film that was mentioned several times in the Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday night… and that he thought I would enjoy it…
The title is “The Last Repair Shop”, and is evidently about a group of instrument repair technicians in Los Angeles that have been repairing instruments for public school students since 1959.
So yes… I was intrigued.
The show opened with a young girl explaining her pursuits on the violin. She spoke of family issues, relatives with health problems, and how her support system wasn’t very focused on her violin playing. And then she says something like… “Don’t make me imagine a world without my violin”.
I’m hooked.
And from there on it’s just an incredibly inspiring story of people going above and beyond to insure that access to music is just that… access to music.
The show features children who had no means to afford musical instruments. And a community that simply wasn’t going to accept that.
A notable quote…”The instrument needs to work flawlessly because for some of these kids… this is their life”.
Amen.
What would we do without music?
“Don’t make me imagine a world without it…”
I highly recommend this documentary. It’s free to stream on YouTube.
